カナダの交通事情

私が忘れてしまっているものも含めて、だいたいアメリカと同じ。カナダは英国領だったので昔は車が左側通行だったが、アメリカに合わせるために1920年代に右側通行に変えたんだと。なぜか、今まで「カナダは左側通行」って誤解していたので、ほっとする。細かいことに目をつぶれば、唯一アメリカと違うのは、カナダではメートル法を使うことくらい。「５０」は最高時速50kmのことで50マイル(= 80km)のことではない。30マイルくらいでてれてれ通行すべし。

- In many areas of Canada (with the exception of Montreal island) it is legal to turn right (after stopping) on a red light, so be careful when crossing the street on foot. （赤信号で右折をしてもよい）*1
- Many secondary (less busy) intersections that are four (or three) way stops have no traffic lights, but have stop signs instead. You have to bring your car to a complete stop and let everyone that stopped before you go first. If two cars arrive at the intersection at the same time, the car to the right has precedence. （あまり交通量が多くない十字路や三叉路では信号機がなく、「Stop」の標識しかないことが多い。この場合、一時停止をし、すでに進入しているすべての車を通過させた後、通行することができる。もし、二台の車が同時に進入したときは右側の車に優先権がある*2）*3
